COME HAVE A WINE DINNER TO HELP US SUPPORT LOCAL FARMS

JOIN US FOR DINNER WITH PLATE & PITCHFORK’s LAST YEAR

Our most beloved farm to table wine-dinner-in-a-field is having their last summer and we get to join! We are pairing up with with MAGNA KUSINA (Food & Wine Best new chef 2021 and Oregonian Restaurant of the Year 2021) August 5th.

Plate & Pitchfork dinners reinforces the connection between the farm and the food on your plate. Each adventurous evening begins with a wine tasting and appetizers before guests take a tour of the host farm. Once the tour is complete guests are seated at beautifully dressed tables for a four-course dinner prepared and served in the middle of a field by some of our region's finest chefs, each course is paired with wine from the evening’s featured winemaker.

Throughout the evening diners hear from the farmer, chefs, winemaker and often times other producers who have contributed to the meal. Dinners are served family style creating a boisterous and celebratory energy.

In honor of the 20th Anniversary Plate & Pitchfork is launching a new non-profit organization to extend the support they provide to Oregon’s food system. The Plate & Pitchfork Producer Fund is a 501c3 organization that will provide financial support to family-owned farmers, ranchers and food producers in Oregon.

Over the last 20 years, farm dinners have become abundant, but farms have not.  In fact, we continue to lose farmland at an alarming rate. The average age of farmers in Oregon is just shy of 60 years old - the highest in the country. As these farmers retire, 10 million acres of land - more than 64% of the state’s farmland - may pass to larger corporate entities or cease to be used for farming entirely. Land has become increasingly expensive and out of reach for many of the next generation of farmers and the inputs needed to grow food - from seed to labor to fuel - are also increasingly expensive.

Plate & Pitchfork is committed to not only feeding our guests, we are committed to providing our food system with the support it needs to thrive. The return on our investment is access to healthy, nutritious foods, thriving rural economies, increased employment, valuable wildlife habitat, replenished groundwater and beautiful open spaces.

PINK PARTY FUNDRAISER FOR REPRODUCTION RIGHTS

Stand up for REPRODUCTIVE healthcare rights with us on Saturday, June 3rd, from 1 - 7pm.

We kicked off this event last year in the tasting room after Roe vs. Wade was struck down. While we are grateful Oregon has strong protections, other states do not. Both Angie and Jess have roots in Texas so it's a natural fit to help women who do not have the same protections we do.

This year we will donate 50% of all profits for the day to the Lilith Fund, which offers direct financial assistance for reproductive healthcare, and provides direct financial and emotional support to Texans forced to travel to access abortions, contraceptives, counseling and gender-affirming care.

We'll be pouring our pink wines and the new Skin Contact Pinot Gris paired with food from the amazing team at The Minnow (you really need to check them out). A few of the plates they are planning are a seared PNW wild-caught albacore loin, coriander & nigella spice blend, spring herb potato salad and a Spring vegetable couscous salad with snap peas, asparagus and pickled carrot magyar pepper dressing.

The Minnow delivers meals, prepped and ready to cook, to families in Portland, OR. Our ingredients are primarily sourced from local farms and product makers.

The wine lineup will be:

  • 2022 “A Frayed Knot” Skin Contact Gewurztraminer

  • 2022 Garageland Rose of Pinot Noir

  • 2022 "Walking on Gilded Splinters" Skin Contact Pinot Gris

  • 2021 Pet Matt Pét Nat Sparkling Rosé of Zinfandel

$15/person tasting fee. Food charged separately. 50% of all profits from tastings and bottle sales go to Lilith Fund. Wine Club savings apply!

SPRING 2020 WINE NEWS

2019 was one for the books. It sure was fun.

Front of our Building on SE 50th Ave

Front of our Building on SE 50th Ave

It has been our longtime family dream to move our winery to Portland, and 2019 is the year that we made that dream a reality. After years of touring warehouses and vacant lots, we secured our sweet spot on the corner of 50th and Kelly and started putting pen to blueprint. It took some patience, and a few tantrums, but we finally got our remodel approved and then we got to break ground.

Grand Opening party photo by Cheryl Juetten

Our building used to be the local neighborhood grocery, built sometime in the ‘20s. We had to take it down to the studs, rebuild the entire storefront, erect seismic sheer walls and pour a new concrete floor. Not to mention installing an entirely new roof.

The back section of our building was erected in the ‘50s, when the street became a bit more light-industrial. It’s the perfect shell for winery production. Lots of roll-up doors and strong floors. All we had to do was put in trench drains, electricity, water, lighting, gas heat, ventilation, a couple of extra doors . . . that’s all.

We finished up construction and got approved for occupancy in the beginning of September (just in the nick of time), moved in our truckloads of equipment and wine in barrels in a big hurry, and then saw our first grapes come through the doors on September 5th. Most of the equipment worked, and the fermentation was smooth (always an unknown in a new space). The drains worked. Phew.

We have never had a tasting room before, but now was the time to open one. Many of you were at our opening party or have been by since to check it out – thanks. We are trying to make it a cool and welcoming place to hang out and enjoy our wines. It’s a pretty room with a full view of the barrel cave. We look forward to putting some tables out on the sidewalk come Springtime so neighbors can bring their dogs. We have started booking some private events – so think of us for your next party or work function. We have also been planning some public events, starting with a special menu we had last Friday for Valentine’s Day.

We got a few mentions you can read more about: EATER PDX and a longer list on our site, here

Single Vineyard New Releases

For those of you who have been paying attention, know that I have never ever released a single vineyard bottling (with one obscure exception). Well, never say never. We are very proud to introduce our brand new Single Vineyard lineup.

2014 Wings of Desire Cuddihy Vineyard Field Blend
This bottling is sourced from the old experimental block at Richard Cuddihy’s eponymous Yamhill vineyard. A co-fermented blend of 8 different grape types all planted next to each other in 1971. This barrel-aged richer styled white is a testament to the hardscrabble early days of Oregon viticulture and to magical accidents. 60 cases produced $30

2014 Sunnyside Vineyard Riesling
This Riesling is a citrusy, apple-y, stone-y and herbal dry Riesling sourced from my favorite Willamette Valley site for the varietal. If you are already a fan of my Riesling, this should deepen your appreciation. If you’re not quite sure, then this is the one to win you over. 25 cases produced $48

2014 Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir
This wine is bolder than my usual Pinots, it nonetheless has a signature grace typical of this storied Eola-Amity vineyard. I have been fortunate to work with Temperance Hill Vineyard fruit since 2007. To cut your teeth on an Oregon “Grand Cru” is a great way to learn winemaking. There are so many respected winemakers who make amazing wines from Temperance, I guess it’s time to throw my hat into the ring. 25 cases $58.

2014 Sunny Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir
Not to be confused with the Sunnyside Vineyard from above of course, I have been seeking fruit from this Southern Willamette site ever since my assistant winemaker days at Brooks. We had some in the fermentation hall there, and it was always my favorite to do punchdowns on. The exotic aromatics of spice and leather were and are seductive and the wine in barrel has power and grip like no other site I’ve had the pleasure to work with. 25 cases $58
