Looking for a fun and exciting way to spend your weekend? Look no further than our

Seasonal Harvest (& Gamay Release) Party on Saturday, October 12th from 1pm to 7pm!

Join us for the unveiling of our brand spanking new 2023 Love & Squalor Gamay Noir, along with an assortment of past-vintage library Gamays and other rare wines. The 2022 Gamay Noir got a great reception in the press and we are sure this one will, too. This crowd favorite usually goes to our Wine Club first, so this is a sneaky chance to get in on it early (and before it inevitably sells out)

In addition to the fantastic wine selection, we'll be featuring FOOD FROM MIRELSA our favorite made-to-order taco specialist. She was such a hit at our last event we’ve asked her to keep it coming with her delicious, fresh, and seasonal Mexican fare - perfect with GAMAY. You won't want to miss out on this tasty experience. Plates will be available for purchase.

We're all about keeping it fun around here, so bring along your furry friends for the patio, your kids, and even your bikes! It has been a crazy harvest and we miss seeing your faces, so come join the festivities. You might even be able to jump in on the harvest – we hope to see you there!

HARVEST 2024 UPDATE

It's the most wonderful time of the year - Harvest!

This will be the 19th harvest for Love & Squalor/Portland Wine Company, but it's never "old hat" nor do I ever tire of it. It's a time of anticipation and excitement, adrenaline and experimentation and camaraderie.

I'm spending more time in our partner vineyards this time of year. Kicking down the dusty rows of Pinot and Riesling to judge how the grapes are growing. We can't wait to get our hands on them, but first we have wait and worry.

The 2024 growing season has been good overall. A bit dry and with more than a few heat spikes that had us concerned about sunburned grapes and reduced natural groundwater supplies. In the picture above you can see the grapes covered with a natural clay sunscreen that protects the skins from damage. The clay is 100% organic and doesn't affect our ability to have clean and fresh natural ferments.

The vineyard pictured is the newest we've added to our lineup. We are proud to announce that we have signed a lease on a Chehalem AVA  site named La Cantera II. The name means "hilltop", and it is located on the crest of Rex Hill just north of Newberg. We can't wait to get our paws on the Pinot noir from LC2.

Happy Harvest to all of you. Thank you for your support of our craft winery. If you find yourself in our neck of the woods, stop in to smell the heady aromas of harvest and sip on some fruits of our labors.

Cheers,
Matt

THREE BOTTLE THURSDAYS

This skin contact Pinot Gris gets its deep dark color from fermenting white grapes on their skins like a red wine, creating a bottle full of beautiful color and texture. The 2023 bottling retains the freshness and fruit of a rosé with added weight and texture from the skin contact. Best enjoyed chilled!

Here's a preview of our October Three Bottle Thursday schedule...more details in coming weeks.

  • Oct 10 -Love & Squalor Gamay Noir (our harvest party is currently slated for the 12th)

THE HERO (WINE) & OUR HERO (MATT)

In the recent article, "Hero Wines," from "Paul Gregutt's Northwest Wine Guide," Paul interviews Matt about Gamay Noir, and in particular, our Love & Squalor Gamay Noir.

It's a lovely read...here's a teaser:

For me, in most flights, there is one standout. Possibly a standout based strictly on flavor; maybe the one wine that offers the greatest value. Sometimes it might be a truly unusual or unique effort, or something so off the wall that it tickles my curiosity. It’s a subject that can be looked at from any number of perspectives, but today I’m focused on two particular varietal wines from two outstanding Oregon winemakers: Matt Berson’s Gamay Noir and Leah Jorgensen’s Cabernet Franc.

In addition to the fantastic wine selection, we'll be featuring MINNOW PDX , a newish chef collective specializing in local, delicious, fresh, and seasonal fare. You won't want to miss out on this tasty experience. Plates will be available for purchase.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month (and Angie kicking the big C this year, yay!) we'll be donating a portion of the day's proceeds to the cause. Come out and show your support while enjoying great food, wine and friends.

We're all about keeping it fun around here, so bring along your furry friends for the patio, your kids, and even your bikes! It has been a crazy harvest and we miss seeing your faces, so come join the festivities. You might even be able to jump in on the harvest – we hope to see you there!
